Torpado Beta

torpado fixie

Components

  • Torpado Beta frame, Italy, ~1980. eBay, $88.88, including
    • Torpado forks
    • Shimano 105 headset
    • Campagnolo bottom bracket and crank (110mm)
  • Wheelset
    • Suzue hubs, Alex AT-450 rims, 14g Stainless Steel spokes from Ben’s Cycle
  • Drivetrain
    • Crankset (165mm arms, 46T), Cog (17T), Chain (3/32″) from Irocycle
  • Pedals (from my mountain bike)
  • Tubes, tyres and rim tape from Spin
  • Toeclips, straps, quill stem, cloth tape and seatpost from Spin
  • Major Taylor bars from Soma
  • Brake caliper (Shimano Sora), lever (BMX), cable from Spin
  • Saddle, Selle Italia from eBay.

Tips

  • Make sure frame has horizontal dropouts
  • Hub width should fit frame, or be prepared to bend frame to fit wheel.

Notes

  • 120mm hub fits in 130mm dropouts with only very moderate force.
  • Campy BB had to be replaced with Shimano, as the 70mm shell width didn’t leave enough spindle to fit the Irocycle crank.
  • As it turns out, the Major Taylor bars, despite their cool looks, are very uncomfortable for everyday use. I had to replace them with a set of standard cheapo drops from the LBS.
  • 13mm rims don’t leave you with many tyre choices.
